Exciting transformations are coming

You can expect to see some exciting new things at The Colombo over the next few months, and we’d like to keep you updated on what to expect.

You may notice that Amigo Café has closed. You can get your caffeinated needs met at Heirloom Café and The Serious Sandwich. We also have a heap of other delicious food options that you can find.

Smiths City, a Christchurch retail icon for over 100 years will be closing its founding site in the city and The Colombo will be home to the Smiths City flagship store. Smiths will even have its own café. It’s exciting times for us and we’re thrilled to be part of this iconic Christchurch business’s new chapter.

Christchurch City Libraries have partnered with The Colombo and will open a new pop-up library in early 2025. The new library will be a temporary replacement for the soon-to-be-rebuilt South library building, which was damaged by the Canterbury Earthquakes and set for demolition in autumn 2024. Out of all the community libraries, South attracts the most visitors and we are very happy to host this wonderful community service just down the road from the original site.

You’ll find the pop-up library on the western side of The Colombo by the carpark entrance, with around 8000 items available, an area for children’s sessions and spaces for people to relax and study.

The pop-up library will be open seven days, with hours to be confirmed. We expect it will operate until December 2026, when the replacement for Christchurch South Library, Ōmōkihi South Library is set to open.

With all change comes a transient time. We want you to know that we will always remain open, even when work and transformations are happening.

Early next year we will have a full complex with a fresh layout. Exciting times ahead for everyone!
