Meet Kim, the experienced new stylist at Headspace

Today we spoke to Kim Thomas, the new stylist at Headspace. Kim has been styling up a storm since arriving in early 2026.

Hi Kim, tell us a bit about yourself! How did you come to be at Headspace?

“I’m new to New Zealand, I’ve been here a few months and I’m originally from the UK. Before arriving in New Zealand, Christchurch kept coming up in conversations, I knew that was my sign to fly here. Since arriving the stars have aligned and I found my new home at Headspace.

“When I arrived I started a job in make-up, and I realised that I really missed creating beautiful hairstyles. Then I came across [Headspace owner] Niq and I knew it was the salon for me. I love working in smaller teams, where we can all support each other and grow.”

What were you doing before you came here?

“I’ve spent a couple of years in Australia, and the last 14 months on Hamilton Island, Queensland, where my main focus was on bridal hair and makeup.

“I’ve worked on cruise ships for 10 years previously to this. Styling hair, selling diamonds and elevating the guests shopping experiences onboard and in the ports of call.”

Amazing. And what has been your hair styling journey?

“I started my apprenticeship as a hairdresser straight out of high school, it’s all I’d ever wanted to do. I also wanted to see more of the world, and got the cruise ships gig combining both, hair and travel.

“My journey took a turn and I got into selling fine jewellery and became a luxury shopping concierge, taking people to luxury stores in different destinations around the world. That wasn’t a bad job to do.

“Then Covid came and I went back to the UK. I ran my own business doing hair, make-up and nails before moving to Australia.”

Do you have any hair style specialities?

“I do a bit of everything, but I definitely have my favourites. I love doing bridal and hair-up styles, creative colours and cuts, and I really love a bouncy blow dry as well.”

What do you like about Headspace?

“Niq, is very supportive with the whole team. He allows us to be creative and supports further training to build and add to our skill set.

“The honour of having someone sit in my chair for an hour or a few hours, talking, hearing about what’s going on – good or bad – in their lives, and being able to make them feel beautiful and possibly turn their day around is why I got into hairdressing. I pride myself on understanding what my clients wants and being able to create their vision. I love making people feel comfortable and confident.”
