Matariki at The Colombo

Welcome to the first ever Matariki public holiday this Friday 24 June! It may be the first time it's been officially recognised, but Matariki has a long history of being celebrated in Aotearoa and in Māori culture.

Matariki is the Māori new year, and it's also the name of a cluster of stars that appears over the morning horizon at this time of year. Matariki is on a slightly different date each year, because it depends on when the stars rise. It was traditionally an occasion to mourn the deceased, celebrate the present, and prepare the ground for the coming year.

The Colombo has special holiday hours for Matariki on Friday 24 June. We will be open from 10am until 5pm.
